Vegan and Vegetarian food in Okinawa

During our time in Okinawa we've had quite a few vegan friends visit, and of course H is a vegetarian, so it has been our mission to search out the tastiest vegan and vegetarian food options in Okinawa!

Before we leave Okinawa for good, I thought I would share with you our favourites.

DECHIBICA

Dechibica is probably my favourite and first place I will usually take any vegans visiting us. Not only is the food delicious, but it's presented so beautifully, it's hard not to be impressed.

They offer a variety of vegan meals (as well as a couple of non-vegan options) and everything we've ever tried there has been great! Another bonus if you're with kids, is the fact that they have a bunch of kids toys there to entertain them if you forgot to bring anything from home.

Dechibica is located in Furugen, Yomitan and you can follow their Facebook page for directions, opening hours and daily specials

GUBGUB'S VEGAN KITCHEN

Update - I've heard GubGubs is now closed but the owner can still be found selling burgers at the Koza Vegan Night market and the vegan food fest.

GubGub's is the ultimate vegan junk/comfort food experience. We have been here with vegan friends numerous times and they are always blown away by the food! Their Cheeseburger and BBQ burgers are my ultimate favourites. They also offer an option to pay a little more and support animal welfare, and you can bring your dogs and sit outside if the weather is nice.

Gub Gubs is also located in Yomitan and you should follow the Facebook page as the opening hours can sometimes vary or he might sell out. Always good to check before you go.

UKISHIMA GARDEN

Ukishima Garden is a lovely vegan restaurant in Naha, perfect for a fancy date night with organic wines. We have been here every time we have been to Naha and it's always lovely. Their tofu caprese salad tastes just like real mozzarella, and the creamy pasta was also amazing. Their lunch menu is more casual with burgers, soups and curry.

Ukishima Garden Naha

Ukishima Garden is on Ukishima-dori, just off Kokusai Dori, so easily accessible when exploring Naha. They also have another restaurant in Kyoto.

BOLLYWOOD DREAMS

Bollywood Dreams is the most delicious Indian resaturant we have found in Okinawa (and we've tried lots!). They also have a select number of vegan curries, which are amazing! The dinner menu is more extensive and lunch is mostly just set meals. This place gets BUSY, so it's worth coming early for lunch or dinner.

Bollywood Dreams is located in American Village in Chatan, and they have also recently opened a second restaurant, Bollywood Jewel a short walk from the original.

ESPARZA'S TACOS AND COFFEE

Esparza's is relatively new offering vegan and non-vegan options, but has an aim to be completely vegan in the next year or 2. They have delicious tacos and even open early for breakfast burritos.

Esparza's Tacos and Coffee is located on Route 58 in Chatan

SAKAE RYORITEN

Ok, so Sakae Ryoriten is the place we keep going back to, and pretty much take all guests to. It's "okinawan style" food, so a great way to get a taste of the local cuisine, but they will also adjust the menu for any allergies or dietary requirements where they can, which means making food vegan and vegetarian friendly. It's also very kid friendly.

The go-to dishes they will adjust for vegetarians is the Umibudo (sea grape) and tomato salad, the jimami dofu (peanut tofu), the seasonal stir fry vegetables and the eggplant and red pepper with miso stir fry. They might likely adjust other dishes, but these are our go to every time we're there.

Sakae is located in Ishikawa and they have ample parking space in a lot across the road. The entrance is quite unassuming (pictured above).

COCO'S CURRY

What would a post about vegan food be without mentioning the vegan menu at Coco Ichibanya? Coco's, over the past year or so have been rolling out a vegetarian menu at select stores. It says vegetarian but is actually vegan. In Okinawa only 2 stores that I know of have the vegetarian menu, Ishikawa and Haebaru. Please feel free to comment if there are any more additions to this. Cocos, although i'm sure is full of MSG, is super delicious!

I'm sure there are many more options in Okinawa, but the above are the ones I regularly eat at and love. If you want to keep up to date with new places and other options, I recommend joining the Okinawa Vegans and Vegetarians Facebook Page, as people are always adding new places, and it's a good place to ask for advice.

Esparza's Tacos and Coffee

Last weekend while we were in Chatan getting my iPhone screen replaced (I finally dropped it one too many times) we decided to finally try out a new place for lunch. We have driven past Esparza's Tacos and Coffee quite a few times and each time I commented on how good it looked. After reading about how they had vegan and vegetarian options (hard to some by in Okinawa), we decided to take the plunge and try it.

We got there at 12 and it was already pretty busy and we managed to nab the last free table. I was super excited to see the menu option, over half being vegan and it all sounded delicious! We decided to share the Vegan Chorizo tacos and the two bean tacos. The vegan chorizo is basically made with tofu and chorizo spices, and was super tasty. They also had a kind of vegan parmesan on top, and I have no idea what that was made from, but it was another nice touch. The two bean burritos were also tasty, but my favourite were definitely the "chorizo" ones.

The tacos were huge, and they also have a "salsa" bar, with different sauces, salsas and an onion and coriander mix. Definitely a nice touch!

Esparza's also serves a range of drinks, including Coronas, sangria and tequila drinks. The other good thing (and a rarity in Okinawa) is that it opens from 7am for breakfast (servicing breakfast burritos and pancakes).

Esparza's is located on route 58 in Chatan, and you can find the map here. It's great to have another vegan and vegetarian friendly option in Okinawa!

Vegetarian (and vegan) food in Kyoto

A couple of weeks ago we were in Kyoto for a few days. As you all know, i'm not vegetarian, but H is, and we have a lot of vegan friends, so we're always on the look out for Vegan and vegetarian friendly places to eat when we're travelling.

While we were in Kyoto we actually stumbled across a few gems, completely by accident!

All these vegetarian/vegan friendly places in Kyoto were in the Teramachi shopping arcade area, so great stops when you're in the central city shopping area. I've put links to their location on Google maps below

Sen no Kaze Ramen

This ramen restaurant looks deceiving. We actually walked past it a couple of times and didn't consider it because all the pictures on the menu out the front were meat-based. After doing a google search for vegan and vegetarian ramen in Kyoto, this place was mentioned! We headed back there and asked the staff (who spoke great English) and she advised they do have vegetarian and vegan ramen. The vegetarian ramen is in a soy-based broth, and they will make a special vegan ramen on request.

If you're looking for a warm bowl of ramen on a cold day and a drink to wash it down, this is the place for you! It's small and popular, so I recommend getting there when it opens, although when we arrived we only waited about 15 minutes and the turnover seemed to be fairly quick. This is also a great option if you are travelling with a meat-eater.

Matsuontoko

Matsuontoko is a completely vegan restaurant just around the corner from the ramen place above. We happened to spot to sign outside when we were walking past and went straight in!

The menu includes burgers as well as soup and vegan lunch plate sets, organic beer and wine.

There is plenty of seating inside, and the burgers were tasty!

You can find their location here

Floresta Donuts (Vegetarian)

So these aren't actually vegan, but they are a great dessert treat if you are vegetarian. These donuts are fantastic because they are not super sweet like Mr Donut or Krispy Creme and the company is trying to make a healthier donut using local and organic ingredients. Also, their animal donuts are so cute and Instagrammable!

Other vegetarian options in Kyoto:

I noticed quite a few Indian restaurants in the main shopping area with vegetarian menus, which is also easy if you are looking for something tasty to eat.

Have you been to Kyoto? Are there any other vegan and vegetarian places you recommend?

Ain Soph Ripple - Vegan burgers in Tokyo

The entrance to Ain Soph Ripple
So as most of you know, i'm not vegan, or really even vegetarian, but I do live with a vegetarian (so eat vegetarian 95% of the time) and have many a vegetarian and vegan friend. For these reasons, and the fact that I LOVE planning holiday itineraries, I am always on the look out for the best vegan places to eat, which is how I came across Ain Soph Ripple.

This past weekend, I was in Tokyo with some vegan friends, and I wanted to give them the best Tokyo experience possible. I had heard about the Ain Soph restaurants and wanted to get to at least one of them. I decided on Ripple, because who doesn't love a good dirty burger, and these looked the business!

We arrived there at around 12:15, and were lucky to grab a table (we were a group of 6), even though it's a pretty small place. The menu isn't huge, which I liked, so we decided on the cheese burger and the crispy "chicken" burger. Everything on the menu is vegan, even though it sounds like it isn't.

The burgers were tasty and I really loved the fries. The vegan cheese they used was really good. it was really melty like real cheese. If you're a vegan and looking for some junk food, I think it's worth the effort to get here, although I wasn't completely blown away by the burgers, which is probably just because we had eaten at Gub Gubs here in Okinawa a few days before, which makes probably the best burgers i've ever had (and that's including meat burgers too!).

Ain Soph ripple was easy to find. The closest station is Shinjuku San-chome on the Tokyo Metro Maronouchi and Fukutoshin lines however, it as also a short walk from Shin Okubo on the Yamanote line, if like me you were with small children and didn't want to change trains.

Green Leaf Cafe Yomitan

As i've mentioned before, i've been dieting to try and get back to my "normal" weight. And by normal, I mean the weight i've been for most of my adult life up until 2 years ago, when I piled on the love weight. Anyway, the diet is working and i've almost reached my goal. Unfortunately, dieting has also meant much less frequent eating out, which is one of my favourite things to do! Luckily, this weekend we decided to finally try out the new Green Leaf cafe in Yomitan. It is joined to the Green Leaf organic grocery store and it's fantastic!

One of the main reasons we wanted to go there was because it is pet friendly. Yep, you can take your dog and sit in the lovely outdoor area. Unfortunately it was a bit windy when we went, but we still had a lovely time.

Really lovely inside

Dogs are welcome outside
They have a range of food options, from build your own salads, curry, bagels, quiche and taco rice. A lot of the food is vegan and vegetarian.
Helen and I shared the vegetable curry and the soy meat taco rice. Both were really wholesome, tasty and healthy! Little G chose the prosciutto bagel, and pretty much just ate the bagel and cream cheese and none of the filling.
They have a great selection of organic wines and beers too, so I tried one of the organic beers, which was delish! All the beers are under ¥500 each too, which is good.

I definitely recommend making the effort to try out the Green Leaf Cafe

Tokyo Travel with a child Part 3!

Our second full day in Tokyo, we decided to take it easy. The last time we took the little guy on a trip to Kyoto and Osaka, I tried to fit too much into a day, which ended up more exhausting and stressful than it needed to be. This time was much better. Since we were staying in Harajuku, after our Dominique Ansel breakfast we walked up to the Meiji Jingu Shrine, which is right next to JR Harajuku station. There were a heap of weddings happening there, which was great, because I love looking at the brides in their beautiful traditional wedding outfits. We bought a wood block and wrote a family wish and hung it up. It was a lovely time.

After a rest back at the apartment, we decided to head out in search of some mexican food (mostly some frozen margheritas). We found this awesome little place in the back streets of Harajuku called Chiles, and settled in. The frozen strawberry margheritas were exactly the kind of holiday drink we were after, and the food was delish too! Griff loved their kids plate, which had a ham and cheese quesadilla, beans, rice and condiments. It had a great selection of vegetarian options as well!

We ended the day with a lovely dinner with my friend Yuko, who I haven't seen in over a year. All in all, it was such a great trip. And the thing that I love about Tokyo, is no matter how many times I visit, I never ever get bored of it.

There were many weddings going on this day. This was just one!

We made a family wish and hung it.

I love the old school tools they use to keep the grounds clean.

GubGub's Vegan Kitchen Yomitan

Yesterday, while searching Facebook for good vegetarian food in Okinawa, I stumbled across GubGub's Vegan Kitchen in Yomitan. I saw a photo of a faux meatball sub and instantly showed it to H, because I knew she would want it - instantly. That settled it, straight after work we drove to Yomitan and went to GubGub's Vegan Kitchen. It did not disappoint!

Everything on the menu is vegan, and ranges from hamburgers, to pizzas, tacorice and hotdogs. I decided on the cheeseburger, and H got the meatball sub. Both were delicious and exceeded expectations. They were both really saucy (hehe), so needed lots of napkins to keep ourselves looking presentable. I kept commenting on the fact that the sauces on my cheeseburger made it taste just like a whopper!

The interior of the restaurant is really cute and the owners are lovely! They speak great English and were really friendly. There were only 3 tables (seating about 4-6 people each), so they can't seat a lot of people inside, but they also have a bar outside serving yummy alcoholic drinks. The bar is also dog friendly! I can't wait to go back.

You can find a map to their location on their Facebook page here, but it's just off route 6 near the ocean. I highly recommend it.
