Good Day Coffee - Sunabe

Good Day Coffee in Sunabe is an Australian Style Cafe with a delicious menu and open from 6am-3pm everyday except Monday

Recently I found out that there was an "Australian style" cafe down in the Sunabe area, and to top it off, it actually opens before 9am (which if you have kids, you know is important!). So we have now been to Good Day Coffee a couple of times and it's really lovely.

We got to talking to the two guys that run the place, and they actually met in my hometown on the Gold Coast (Coolangatta) in Australia, when they were on a working holiday. It was so cool, and reminds you what a small world it is!

Such a cute interior
The menu is small, but everything on it is delicious. The French toast, in particular is amazing! I'm not a sweet breakfast person and I could eat plate after plate of this! They also do one of my favourite things, and such a typical Australian cafe menu item, avocado on toast with feta cheese!

Their coffee is brewed in Byron Bay, which also has family ties to me, and they make a great latte!
They also sell Tasmanian honey, tote bags and some other little bits and pieces that are pretty cute.

This place is definitely my new favourite cafe in Okinawa, and I think we will find ourselves there often of a weekend.

Rockers cafe - Vegan Cafe in Chatan

Rockers Cafe in Chatan is a great vegan place with burgers, curry and burritos. It's also open as a funky bar and has great outdoor seating overlooking the water.
Rockers Cafe
A few weeks ago, after being disappointed we couldn't get a seat at Gub Gubs Vegan Kitchen, we decided to head to Rockers Cafe to see what it was like. Rockers Cafe is a new vegan cafe in Chatan, by the seawall, and it was really lovely.

The interior of Rockers Cafe looks more like a fancy bar than a vegan cafe, which I loved, and they have a big deck out the back with tables that overlook the seawall. Because it was a lovely day, we opted to sit out on the deck!

By the time we got out food we were all starving, so I totally forgot to take photos of the burgers we had. They were all really tasty. We tried both the Original Veggie Burger and the teriyaki burger and both were great! The curry was also delicious. They also have a bunch of vegan muffins, cakes etc that you can take away with you.

We will definitely be back.

Il gastro Sara

il Gastro Sara is an Italian style restaurant on route 58 in Onna village
Out front
A few weeks ago, a new restaurant opened up on route 58 about 5 minutes from my work! This kind of thing is always exciting for me because it means somewhere new to have the occasional lunch date with H and time away from the office. Il Gastro Sara, is an Italian style restaurant with a focus on fresh and seasonal vegetables. We were super happy to see that they offer a few vegetarian options as well as some other options (like the curry) that you can make vegetarian.

We have now been there twice, and although it's not AMAZING, it is a nice place for lunch. The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous, and I especially love that you can see what's happening in the kitchen. The staff are really nice and speak some English, and they also have an English menu. Both lunch times we have been there it has been quite busy, so it might be worth ringing to book a table if you have a few people in your party.

Everything on the menu seems to be made fresh, and you have an option of adding a soup or salad and a drink to your lunch (which also comes with fresh baked bread!) for an extra 500yen. The first time I had the salad, which was lovely, and the second time I opted for the soup (Corn), but I didn't realise it was going to be cold soup, so that was kind of odd, and not really my thing, even though it was tasty.

I look forward to trying out their night time menu sometime soon. You can find the location of the restaurant on the map on their website, but if you know where Cafe Doka Doka is, it is about 1 minute past that on route 58.

Life lately - March

This month so far has been pretty quiet for us. The weather every weekend has been pretty miserable so we haven't really gotten out for any adventures and we're just starting to get excited for our first lot of visitors for the year arriving in 2 weeks. Even though the weather on the weekends has sucked, we are starting to see more blue skies and sunny days about (even if I am stuck in the office on those days!).

In fact, we got so excited about the potential for good weather on a future weekend, that we bought ourselves a tent! That's right. This year is going to be the year of camping for our little family. In Okinawa you can actually camp on the beach, pretty much set yourself up on any old random beach that takes your fancy (well maybe not fancy hotel beaches or pay to enter beaches). Last year I even saw a few tents set up on the beach across from our house. Our aim is to do it on someone else's beach! If you have any recommended pet-friendly camp sites in Okinawa, please let me know!

Lunch with a view at Cafe Doka Doka
On one of the lovely weather work-days last week, we headed out for a lunch date at Cafe Doka Doka, just down the road from work to make the most of the sun and eat pizza. That cafe really has the best views! They also sell the nicest pottery i've seen on the island.

Last week we also had the opening of little G's childcare centre art show. His childcare is at my work (and is awesome) and every year they have an art exhibit up on campus. Some of the stuff is so adorable. All the kids came up for the opening and we got to walk around with G looking at all his artwork.

Tis the season for some amazing sunsets
This week we have also had some spectacular sunsets. Because they days are longer and not so chilly, it's really nice to get home and sit outside on the deck with a glass of wine, while G has a play and watch the sun setting. It's a great way to unwind.

Little Cactus Bagels - Sunabe Seawall

Last weekend before G's swimming lesson we decided to go in search of a bagel place that I had seen someone post on their instagram...... mmmm bagels. I had heard of Cactus Eatrip and their delicious bagels but had never been because it's in Ginowan, which is just a little bit further than we usually go for our usual weekend errands, however when I discovered that they had another, little outpost on the Sunabe Seawall (pretty much on the way to swimming), I couldn't get there fast enough. Little cactus is part of a kind of mini food court with two other vendors. It's hard to describe, but more like a cafe setting, but with three different counters to order food from the vendor you want. The other two were a donut ball place and a chicken and beer place. The both also looked good.

We ordered one with sun dried tomato and herbs cream cheese, and one with avocado and tomato. They were both delicious and I really loved the texture of the bagels. Their coffee though..... not the greatest. That's ok though because the bagels were awesome! We will definitely be back.

Bagel goodness!

Anettaichaya Hammock Cafe

Last weekend, as I previously posted about, we went in search of the cherry blossoms at Nakijin Castle Ruins, about 1 hour drive north of our place in Onna-son. After we had had our fill of blossoms and blossom related snacks we decided to find somewhere for lunch. Originally I really wanted to try a vegetarian place I had read about, which turned out to be closed. Next I though we should try Pizza in the Sky, which everyone seems to rave about, however when we got there it was SO busy and it looked like there would be a huge wait, so we headed about 100 metres down the road to the third option, Anettaichaya Hammock Cafe. I was so glad the first 2 options didn't work out because I LOVED Anettaichaya.

Entrance
There were only two other customers there when we arrived, which was lucky because it meant that we could be seated at one of the outdoor hammock tables, which are the best! The table was basically in a little sun shelter with comfy cushions and of course, the hammock. The weather was one of the only amazing clear sky days we have had in a month, so the view was incredible. The staff were really helpful accommodating a vegetarian. They advised us what was vegetarian and what could be made vegetarian (the pizza toast and the coconut toast) and also checked that we were ok with eggs and dairy. I had the chicken and vegetable pho, which was super tasty, and H had the pizza toast and G had the cinnamon and coconut toast. We also had a cup of hot chai which was super delicious! I could have sat around there all afternoon enjoying the view, but eventually after we all had a turn on the hammock we got in to the car and made the drive home after a lovely day. If you are ever up Motobu way, I definitely recommend stopping at Anettaichaya for lunch!

I love this mug!
